Child's First Dental Visit

WHEN SHOULD YOU TAKE YOUR CHILD FOR FIRST DENTAL VISIT?

This question has different answers for everyone. Some say that it should be around child’s third birthday as by this age the child reaches a development stage where he/she can cooperate much better. For some, this depends on their cultural and social belief or we can say parental attitudes (awareness or lack of it). What also plays a significant role is access to dental care, the cost of the treatment and attitude of general population/dentist who do not give priority to importance of milk teeth.

What exactly is the right time?

The American Dental Association and other dental organizations advocate that child should see the dentist at the age of one year. This allows the dentist to examine the child and educate the parents about effective preventive care, diet, injury prevention and fluoride needs, etc.

Steps to prepare your child for the dental visit at home

  1. Prepare yourself about having an in depth talk with your dentist. You need to be calm so that your child is calm.

  2. Make no promises to your child regarding treatment that it won’t hurt.

  3. Do not express your own fears in front of your child.

  4. You can play “dentist” at home with your child by making him the dentist and you be the patient or vice versa. Just incorporate few elements of what it might look like.

  5. Never make an appointment at the time when your child usually plays or takes a nap.

Most parents in India take their child to the dentist when the situation is bad or home remedies are not helping. This often leads to the possibility of child visiting the dentist in excruciating pain and in fear. As a result that creates a negative environment. The importance of milk teeth should never be neglected - they are the one which keep right space for permanent ones.
