Teething can be any parent’s nightmare. It can be worrying to see your child undergo teething. If your child’s teething has been trouble free, please take out a moment to thank your stars. But majority of you won’t be the lucky ones!!
And therefore, we will talk about signs and symptoms of teething and how we can make teething less painful for both your child and you. So, let’s understand teething and how you can help your child in teething in more holistic way.
What is teething?
Teething simply means the first time the teeth come out of your child’s gum.
When to expect teething?
So your child has 20 milk teeth in total. The journey starts with lower central incisors (front teeth) making their debut around 4-7 months of age. By around the age of 2.5- 3 years, all the milk teeth are ready to assist your child in eating.
What to expect during teething?
Your teething baby may end up giving you sleepless nights. Your tiny tot may show crankiness or irritability. Other signs may include-
Chewing on hard objects.
Sore or tender gums.
Excessive drooling.
Trouble sleeping.
Slight increase in temperature.
Teething can make your child really uncomfortable. Expect a slight rise in temperature. But, if the child has fever or diarrhea then it could be due to something else. Please make sure you speak to your child’s pediatrician or dentist. Avoid self-medication!

How to make it easy for your child?
First and foremost we have to soothe the gums to ease out the pain for your child. Let’s see how to do that-
a) Rub your baby’s tender gums gently. It will help soothe them. Never forget to wash your hands before you do this.
b) Wipe the face gently with a cloth. Do this often in case your child is showing excessive drooling.
c) A solid teething ring or spoon to be kept in fridge to make it chilled. Then, you handover the same to your child. Biting onto them will be soothing.
d) Show lots of affection! Your tiny tot might be going through pain and discomfort. You need to cuddle your child to make him/her calm.
While the onset of teething may seem too stressful, it can be easily managed at home taking help from a doctor. Communicate freely with your dentist to know more about it. In case of any atypical symptoms such as fever or diarrhea, seek help of a pediatrician.
Avoid over the counter remedies, pain killers without asking the concerned doctor and don’t give teething bracelets that may cause choking. If your child has started on solid foods then food like cucumber or carrot may also help in relieving the gum pain as your child makes a bite on them.
Teething may be a tough ride at times but together we can make it easy for you and your child.
